Avery Edward “Ed” Gunn

Ed was born on November 24, 1933, in the Little Hurricane Creek community of New Hope. He entered into the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ on February 14, 2025, just before 9:00 p.m.

Ed was a faithful and obedient servant of Christ. He drew others closer to Him through his Christlike example. He served as a Deacon for many years. We all have peace knowing where he is now, just as it says in the 14th chapter of the book of John:

“1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

Aside from his most important decision to ask Christ into his heart, was his decision to marry the love of his life, Margie May Gunn on September 6, 1953. Through their 71 years, they built a love that’s truly something we should all strive for. They have 3 beautiful children, Mike Gunn (Brenda), Lisa Kimmons (Darryl), Keith Gunn (Robin). He is also survived by his grands and great grands he was proud beyond measure to have. Grandchildren; Stephanie Gunn Zumo (Kirk), Will Gunn (Lydia), David Gunn (Meghan), Riley Dotson (Jannah), Alaina Moran (Earl), Amber Crowell (Chad), Ashley Lyle (Shane), Avery Gunn (Taylor), and Audrey Gunn, Great Grandchildren; Katherine Zumo, Emily Zumo, Emma Gunn, Eva Gunn, Ryan Gunn, Karlie Gunn, Aidan Oakley (Audrey), Ayslin Dotson, Jude Dotson, Eason Moran, Caiden Crowell, Chris McLeod, Rheagan Rachford, Charlie Lyle and Colter Lyle

Preceding him in death are parents: William “Will” Gunn and Hallie Pearl Holland Gunn, sisters: Johnnie Ruth Ulrey, Ruby Nell Martin, Tommie Mae Belleau, Mary Jo Forster, and his twin sister, Margie Lee Watkins

Ed was many things to many people. Aside from the loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather mentioned above, he was a friend to all. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and also served in the National Guard. He worked for BellSouth, later known as AT&T, for 37 years until he retired in 1991. Before he left for Korea, he was set to become a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals farm team. He was also an avid huntsman and fisherman. He enjoyed his time teaching any and everyone everything he knew. From hunting, fishing, farming, and gardening, to how to make his famous peanut brittle, and the best hush puppies you’ll ever eat. He was a master checkers and Rook player. He could often be found on his patio or in his sunroom rocking, and loved a good Western. Where he went, so did his loving bride he referred to as, “Shoog”. While the legacy he built and the people he touched will all mourn him, we are all so blessed to have been loved by him for as long as we were. We can only hope and aspire to be as great a human and Christian as him.
