Loyd Edward Bowman, Sr., 84 of Waverly, passed away Sunday, March 18 at Three Rivers Hospital. Loyd was born Nov. 13, 1933 in Nashville, TN to Mavis Tate Bowman and L.D. Bowman, Sr. He attended schools there until moving to McEwen as a teenager and attending McEwen High School, then Waverly Central High, where he graduated in 1951. He and 7 good friends joined the US Navy immediately after graduation. Loyd served as radarman on the USS Gearing in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. He later lived in Nashville and Waverly where he worked for the US Post Office for 36 years and was postmaster at the McEwen office. He and his family also owned and operated an upholstery shop and country store. The journey of Loyd and his wife of 48 yrs., Jo Anne Brown Bowman, began in 1970 when they married and blended their families of 3 boys. They lived on a farm in Humphreys Co. and raised and showed black Angus cattle when the boys were young. They later maintained a non-registered herd and had a variety of animals. In late 1975, they added a daughter to their family. They loved to travel and loved adventures. Their travels took them to 6 continents. Loyd has served on the Humphreys County Coop's board of directors and Farm Bureau board of directors. He was a past member of NAPS, (National Association of Postal Supervisors) and NAPUS (National Association of Postmasters). In addition to his wife, Loyd is survived by 2 sons, Loyd Bowman, Jr. of Waverly, Clay Bowman of McEwen, stepson, Todd Cable (Karen) of Waverly and 1 daughter, Victoria Bowman Yates (Gene) of Dickson, 3 grandchildren, Brandy Yarbrough (Matt) of McEwen, Taylor Cable and Austin Cable of New Johnsonville and 1 great granddaughter. He is survived by 2 sisters, Yvonne Vanderpool of Nashville and Wanda Baty-McCaslin (Robert) of Florida, a sister-in-law, Rachel Bowman of Atlanta, GA and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Don Davis, a brother, L. D. Bowman, Jr and brother-in-law, John Vanderpool. Mr. Bowman will be cremated per his wishes and his ashes will be mixed with those of his wife and special dog, Penny, and spread in several places where he and Jo Anne loved to visit. Humphreys Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial/celebration of life for family will take place at a later date.
