Mary Eunice Durham was born July 12, 1920, on a farm in Charlotte, Tennessee, to Sallie Raymond and James S. Pentecost the last of their seven children (Sarah Estes, Ruth West, Ethel Miller, Marshall Pentecost, Raymond Pentecost, and Wilma Mae Wright) and passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, after an extended stay at NHC in Dickson.
Although she won several beauty contests, her proudest accomplishment was Dickson County Spelling Bee Champion. Mary Eunice and her husband W. A. Durham, Jr. were active in their church, community, children's schools, and Boy Scouts. She was assistant postmaster in the Charlotte Post Office until her retirement at 72 and enjoyed her time there with her co-workers and people they served. Her happiest times were spent with her many family members. She also liked working in her yard and flower garden and was well-known for the caramel cakes she made. She was a lifelong Democrat and always voted. After all she was born the year women got the right to vote. Being a children's advocate came easily to her and led to interesting conversations.
Mary Eunice (Eukie) was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings and will be missed by her daughter Joy Durham and son Butch Durham and his wife Janelle, grandchildren and great-grandchildren Amy, her husband Chris Andrade, their children Ally and Will; Andy Durham, his wife Angela, their children Carter and Reese; Brian Cooksey, his wife Melissa Gay, and their son Brendan; Kathy Peppers, her children Kelsey Angelilli, Kari Hicks, and Luke Sivley; many loved nieces and nephews; and special neighbors Patti, Phillip, Will, and Mitch Duke. The family thanks her caregivers Tammy Lewis, Becky Evans, and the staff at NHC and Caris Hospice for all they did for her.
Visitation will be held 10:00 am until the service at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Spann Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Charlotte Community Church or a charity of your choice.
