Nancy Mae Hooper Allen

September 1, 1936 — August 21, 2024

McEwen

Mrs. Nancy Mae Hooper Allen, our precious mother, went to be with Jesus, her Lord and Savior, on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at the age of 87. She was born September 1, 1936, in Clarksville, TN, to Will and Elizabeth Luffman Crawford. Mrs. Allen was lovingly called Mama, Mommy, and George by her children, while her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other family and friends called her by their own special names. Whether it was Granny, Granny Mae, Mama Mae or Mrs. Mae, everyone knew who you were speaking of. Mama loved her children and family deeply, and she would make a point of telling them adding, “Doug and Linda have been in this family so long, they’re just like my own”. Her friends were also very dear to her, and she never met a stranger.

When family and friends came to visit Mama Mae, she knew that meant you were hungry. Cooking your favorite meal or dessert brought pure joy to Mama Mae. While visiting, you got to share some of her favorite pastimes like listening to gospel music, especially the Gaithers, reading and working her Bible word search, and rocking on the front porch while watching her birds. The cardinals were her favorite. She loved hearing the shenanigans of the family’s fur babies, especially Tinley and Theo. Mama Mae also treated the neighbor’s dog like she was her own.

On hot days, Mama Mae’s mailman knew to go into the kitchen and get his own cold bottle of water out of the fridge. And of course, he took the mail inside and hand delivered it on his way to the fridge. She also made sure there were always fresh cookies in the cookie jar!

Mama Mae had a dear friend that would come by to cut roses from her rose bush to take home to his wife. His wife knew the roses came from Mama Mae’s. And trips to Walmart were quite an adventure. She always smiled and stopped to talk to the babies along the way asking if they wanted to go home with her. Only to leave them with their parents crying because they didn’t get to go home with Mama Mae because the poor parents had to say no.

As we reflect on Mama Mae's life, we celebrate not just the years she spent with us but the love and joy she shared. She will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family forever.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mathai and the Humphreys County Nursing Home’s nurses and healthcare workers for their exceptional care for our mom. We would also like to thank Tennessee Quality Hospice, especially Josh Mullinax. We can only begin to express what your love and kindness has meant to us all.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 – 7:00pm Friday, August 23rd and from 10:00am until service time Saturday, August 24th at Humphreys County Funeral Home.

Funeral Services for Mama Mae will be conducted at 1:00pm Saturday, August 24, 2024, in the Humphreys County Funeral Home Chapel with Marcus Vine officiating.

Interment will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hippie Hooper Memorial Ride for Wheaties Kids, P.O. Box 298, Waverly, TN 37185. You may also leave your donations at the funeral home, and we will forward them for you.
